THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME…
A new year! And a new year for the VES Awards – or Visual Effects Society Awards – which will be holding their 22nd ceremony on February 21. This event, which honors and rewards the best achievements in visual effects in the film and TV industry, celebrates the crucial importance of FX in contemporary visual storytelling, and helps to raise quality standards for tomorrow’s productions. Cinema, TV series, commercials, video games… The productions eligible for the VES Awards encompass a wide range of formats, and equally diverse projects.
For each project selected, the spotlight is truly on the talent of the artists involved in the productions concerned. For this 22nd edition, ESMA is proud to have no fewer than 5 representatives, scattered across 4 distinct categories:
- in the “OUTSTANDING ANIMATED CHARACTER IN AN ANIMATED FEATURE” category, Gregory Coelho (class of 2009) and Olivier Pierre (class of 2011) are nominated for the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Superfly),
- in the “OUTSTANDING CREATED ENVIRONMENT IN A PHOTOREAL FEATURE” category, Timothée Maron (class of 2019) is nominated for the film The Creator (Floating Village),
- in the “OUTSTANDING CREATED ENVIRONMENT IN AN ANIMATED FEATURE” category, Olivier Mitonneau (class of 2006*) is nominated for the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Midtown Manhattan),
finally, - in the “OUTSTANDING MODEL IN A PHOTOREAL OR ANIMATED PROJECT” category, Thomas Gallardo (class of 2014) is nominated for the film Peter Pan & Wendy (Jolly Roger).
ALREADY 3 ALUMNI SELECTED IN 2023
As a reminder, in 2023, of the 3 students shortlisted for the VES Awards – Lucie Martinetto, Maria Fernanda Corcho and Julien Gauthier – the latter was rewarded for his work on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series.
Let’s hope this year is at least as prolific! See you on February 21 for the results…
* Olivier Mitonneau is a graduate of ETPA, where he took the former “3D computer graphics multimedia” course, which now corresponds to ESMA’s 3D cinema animation course.
