THE MISSIONS OF THE RENDERING ARTIST
Image rendering consists in the automatic process of generating an image from a 2D or a CG model (using computer programs). The rendering artist colours, paints, sculpts and shapes like any other artist, although its medium remains exclusively digital.
Rendering is a technique primarily used in video games, animated films, simulators, architectural designs, FX and design visualization. The techniques and features it requires vary from a project to another. Rendering increases efficiency. It is an essential component in the realization of a project, with the rendering artist at the controls.
HIS KNOW-HOW, HIS KNOWLEDGE
Behind the images, there are skills, a real artistic sensitivity as well as a thorough knowledge of lighting and 3D rendering concepts.
A perfect mastery of CG production software solutions, of advanced mathematics (algebra, matrix calculation, differential, integral), of the process of graphic production languages (GLSL, HLSL, CG…), as well as a knowledge of OpenGL ES and the technical constraints associated with development on current mobile platforms is a plus (performance/memory). A mastery of C++, C#, and of the fundamental principles of modelling, texturing and post-processing are an absolute necessity.
The rendering artist tools are Photoshop, Renderman, Rhinoceros, VRay and AutoCAD, as well as other powerful CG rendering software. To use them correctly, the professional must be very accurate with the mouse and keyboard.
The rendering artist is reactive, organized, analytical.
Do you want to go into this profession ? Be aware that an analytical mind, and the capacity to persevere in solving complex problems, are necessary. Moreover, a real desire for communication and very good listening skills enable to identify problems, advise on the solutions to adopt and on the recommended rendering process. The rendering artist is autonomous, organized and responsive, and shows a real interest in original graphic/visual creations.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The rendering artist can evolve within a creative studio, a video game studio as an employee, and can also work as a freelancer.
After a few years of experience, the rendering artist may consider moving into positions of greater responsibility such as supervisor or any other management position within the VFX department.
His expertise in the digital environment and of CG production software solutions are assets that can open doors for him in this industry.
