Because one thing is certain : on a commercial, a clip or an animated short film, the author-director assumes the role of leader.

THE ROLE OF THE AUTHOR-DIRECTOR

Generally, he makes his first steps on short films, which he manages from start to finish : he manages production and logistics issues, handles scriptwriting and directing, and even deals himself with certain post-production matters.

Despite this versatility, and the need to combine several roles (above all when budgets are tight), he must surround himself with the good persons, especially when it comes to delegating more technical aspects.

ON THE FINANCIAL LEVEL

And that’s where the sinews of war, finances, come into play : the author-director is often dependent on them. He will then have to rely on a well-supplied address book, to be able to reach production companies, distributors, or financial partners.

Sometimes, for the sake of his own freedom or out of necessity, he may have to fly solo. He will then have to be very cunning, organized and economical, in order to find solutions to his problems, and get by as best as he can. There again, his contacts (riggers, animators, visual effects specialists, editors…) will greatly help him to give life to his projects.

The lack of distributors does not prevent the author-director from broadcasting his creations, thanks to the Internet media. Festivals and other artistic programs are also a way to showcase his work.
