ESMA students have produced an offbeat comedy: Pirate Fair

News . 15 Jan. 2025

Plunged into a modern and absurd world, three pirates resurrected from the depths of the ocean embark on an adventure that is as eventful as it is hilarious. Focus on Pirate Fair, an original short film by ESMA talent.

In the depths of the sea, three sleeping pirates have been guarding a priceless treasure for centuries. Their tranquillity is shattered when a robot diver, commissioned by the Bay Museum, attempts to seize their precious possession. Awakened against their will, the three privateers find themselves facing a totally unfamiliar modern world. To take back what’s theirs, they must confront a bewildering universe in an adventure full of twists and turns.

So begins Pirate Fair, a short film imagined and produced by ESMA’s final-year 3D Animation and Special Effects students. With its overweening ambition and offbeat tone, this daring project blends action, humour and characters as eccentric as they are unforgettable, offering a refreshing comedy full of sparkle.

A major challenge met: making people laugh

Creating a comedy is a tricky business, and the makers of Pirate Fair were quick to appreciate the scale of the challenge. Writing the script proved to be the most demanding stage, requiring a great deal of trial and error to find the ideal tone and the most effective comic punchlines. To make people laugh, you have to touch a universal emotion, while remaining true to the identity of the characters and the spirit of the story. With its offbeat humour and high-energy staging, Pirate Fair succeeds in drawing its audience into a world that is as whimsical as it is captivating.

A true demonstration of teamwork

The success of this project is based on exemplary collaboration. Each member of the team had to be open to the ideas of others, integrate diverse perspectives and find a balance to work in harmony. The passionate debates around the script, the constant adjustments throughout production and the artistic give and take have forged invaluable skills. This experience not only enriched their creativity, but also prepared the team for the demands of the professional world.
