News . 15 May. 2023
We have received some exciting news: SIGGRAPH has just released the list of films selected for its 2023 edition, and ESMA is proud to have three student films among them! This is a record never before achieved in the history of our animation film school.
THE COMPUTER ANIMATION FESTIVAL ELECTRONIC THEATER: A PROFESSIONAL WORLDWIDE RECOGNITION
SIGGRAPH is an international conference that brings together tens of thousands of participants from all over the world each year. This event, whose first conference dates back to 1974 and will be held this year from August 6th to 10th in Los Angeles, is the largest international event dedicated to animation and computer graphics and enjoys an unparalleled reputation and prestige.
Every year, SIGGRAPH organizes the Computer Animation Festival Electronic Theater, a festival dedicated to animation films, special effects, and digital creation. Since 1999, it has honored the best international achievements in multiple categories: advertising, feature films, short films, cinema, real-time graphics, visual effects, visualization (data-driven), visualization (conceptual animation), and simulation.
This year, ESMA will be well represented in the “short films” category, as among the 15 films in competition, 3 short films from our school have been selected, namely:
- Swing to the Moon, directed by Marie Bordessoule, Chloé Lauzu, Adriana Bouissié, Vincent Levrero, Nadine De Boer, Solenne Moreau, and Elisa Drique
- Roald, directed by Clara Bigache, Armand Gaucheron, Laurent Chavalle, Alexis Lheureux, Julie Chene, Maxime Prone, and Thibault Chopinet
- Malacabra, directed by Marylou Bort, Valentine Miniot, Mathilde Bourges, Vincent Nogues, Hugo Florin, Axel Prukop, Jérémy Guibert, and Pierre Segonds
ESMA AND SIGGRAPH: A LONG HISTORY!
These three selections, which represent a real consecration from animation and special effects professionals and experts, highlight the quality of our school’s teaching. Isabelle Teissedre, ESMA’s educational director, said: “The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival Electronic Theater is THE ultimate meeting dedicated to computer-generated imagery and special effects. It’s a huge joy to see our students’ work praised, and it’s something that will further energize the strength of our network and recognition of the talents that our school harbors.”
This is not the first time that ESMA has been recognized by SIGGRAPH: in 2015, the short film Amir & Amira won the Jury Prize. Two other awards followed: the “Best Student Project” for Je suis un caillou (2021), and the “Audience Choice Award” for Mésozoïque Alternatif (2022). Tea Time and Asteria were also selected in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
ESMA’s educational and administrative teams extend their congratulations to the directors! We look forward to the final verdict in August.
