[Spotted] Our alumni in the credits of The Minions 2: The Rise of Gru
News . 06 Jul. 2022
The most famous yellow creatures in the world are back in the cinema! Seven years after the first opus entirely dedicated to them, the sequel to the adventures of the minions – and that of their master Gru – returns to the cinema for our greatest pleasure.
They wear glasses and jeans, look like yellow capsules, don’t miss a beat and speak in their own idiom. The minions caused a sensation when they appeared in the first part of the Despicable Me saga alongside the iconic Gru. This is a new production from Illumination MacGuff, the studio behind the first Minions feature film and the Despicable Me saga (as well as many other works, all of which have been widely appreciated by audiences).
In the first Minions film, viewers followed their story from the dawn of time to their encounter with Gru in their quest to serve as ambitious villains. The film was a box office success, grossing over $1.1 billion. Fans have waited seven years to see the happy band of minions return to the big screen and continue to unravel the story of their origins with Gru. Initially scheduled for 2020, the film will have been delayed for two years without affecting the motivation of the fans who are there, since in just three days in the United States it immediately took the lead at the box office. In all, this is the fifth film in which these adorable creatures appear.
For this new opus, many former students of the CG Animation and FX Master Degree worked on the project. Indeed, the French studio Illumination MacGuff recruits a lot of ESMA graduates (on this subject, you can see an interview with Amélie Paraiso and Mathilde Chambras, recruiters at Illumination MacGuff, during their visit to the ESMA Lyon campus).

the STUDIO illumination macguff
The Illumination MacGuff studio has quickly earned an indisputable reputation for the quality of its productions: Despicable Me (1 to 3), Minions (1 & 2), The Secrets Life of Pets (1 & 2), The Grinch, Sing (1 & 2) and The Lorax. Its fame is such that Nintendo wanted the studio to be in charge of making the Super Mario bros film.
The birth of this studio is the result of the meeting of Illumination Entertainment and the Mac Guff Line studio. A real “professional love affair” took place, the result of which is now known throughout the world.
minions 2: the rise of gru
Growing up in the suburbs in the midst of the 1970s with bell-bottom jeans and blooming hair, Gru devises a devious plan to get into a famous group of super villains known as the Vicious 6, of whom he is the biggest fan. He is helped in his task by the Minions, his rambunctious and loyal little companions. With the help of Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto – a new Minion with beautiful braces and a desperate need to please – they work together to build their first lair, test their first weapons, and launch their first mission.
When the Vicious 6 sack their leader, the legendary ‘Wild Knuckles’, Gru auditions to join the team. The interview goes awry, to say the least, and suddenly runs out of steam when Gru proves his superiority and suddenly finds himself their archenemy. Forced to flee, he has no choice but to turn to “Wild Knuckles” himself to find a solution, an encounter that will allow him to discover that even super villains sometimes need friends.
