ESMA at Cartoon Forum 2021

School . 26 Oct. 2021
Montpellier, Toulouse

Since 1990, the Cartoon Forum has been the essential meeting place for European animation series professionals, designed to stimulate the production and distribution of European animated content for television and new platforms. ESMA has presented three projects for the 2021 edition. Our students, supported by their teachers, came to pitch their film project in front of professionals.

For three days, producers have the opportunity to pitch their projects in front of about 1000 broadcasters, investors and potential partners from 40 different countries. These are the eloquent and impressive figures of the Cartoon Forum, which allows professionals and European actors of the animation sector to meet. Since its creation in 1990, 860 series have been financed and created thanks to the Cartoon Forum.

PRIVILEGED AND RICH EXCHANGES DURING THREE DAYS

During these three days, project owners and producers/investors meet and exchange ideas. The former hope to see their project selected, while the latter are looking for a pearl of scripted animation that can be integrated into their programs.

These were privileged and rich moments for the students who had the opportunity to discuss various subjects, notably production and the financial aspect of a project. In other words, they were confronted with the reality of the profession during three days of “pitching” television projects designed to promote meetings between content producers, broadcasters and investors.

PITCH TO CONVINCE.

Organized in a meeting mode at the Pierre Baudis Convention Center in Toulouse, each creator had about thirty minutes (of pitch) to convince the assembly of professionals of the value of his or her student short film project (not financed). A stressful but unavoidable moment for our students!

THREE PROJECTS SUBMITTED BY ESMA TOULOUSE AND MONTPELLIER

During this last edition, ESMA presented three projects resulting from an internal pre-selection of the most successful scripts and designs, relying on the teams most likely to pitch in front of professionals in the Ville Rose.

To give them the best chance, our students (4th year of CG Animation & FX Master Degree) were once again coached, as in previous years, by students from TBS (Toulouse Business School), experts in the “sales” aspect.

ESMA Toulouse submitted two projects. The first one was submitted by Adriana Boussié and Elisa Drique with their graduation short film Swing to the moon. The second short film, entitled Goat, was submitted by Marylou Bort, Valentine Miniot and Mathilde Bourges.

These two projects were able to capture the audience of the Bosco amphitheatre (composed of students from film schools in the region, as well as students from TBS who hosted them in their premises) and received enthusiastic feedback from the jury of professionals (producer TAT, producer Xbo, representative of the region, representative of the metropolis).

For its part, ESMA Montpellier proposed Ghostsheep through the teachers, Clément Théobald and Philippe Archer, accompanied by their students Noémie Paul and Eve Ramet. A work that received a very good response.

All in all, the Cartoon Forum was a fantastic experience for each of our students as they embark on their professional careers.
